The Phi Phi Islands are the picture postcard jewel like archipelago in the Andaman Sea, easily reached from Krabi and Phuket, and visited my thousands each year to marvel in their beauty. Accommodation on Phi Phi Island is based entirely based on the largest island, Phi Phi Don, whereas the major tourist attraction, following its central featuring in the movie, “The Beach,” is the nearby Phi Phi Leh, reachable on day trips from its big brother.
Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, are simply limestone rocks jutting out of the sea, and are all very picturesque.
Although attention to the Phi Phi Islands has increased since the 2000 movie, and then momentarily taking a down turn following 2004s tsunami, the island has been a popular west coast tourist destination since tourism in Thailand took an up-turn in the 1970s, before that, in the late 1940s, Phi Phi Don was populated by Muslim fishermen and then became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don is still 80% Muslim.
Phi Phi Leh is home to the 'Viking Cave', which now has a successful sanctuary of birds. Birds nest soup is big business in this part of the world.
Tonsai Village has some vibrant larger accommodation, whereas the hotels further out are more peaceful. The east coast is even more tranquil where boat transport is necessary. Tonsai is rather backpacker orientated, so if luxury and privacy is your thing, you will find greater choice on Phuket - 45 minutes away, and Krabi province, of which Phi Phi Islands are part.
Tonsai Village is the heart of Phi Phi Don, traversable only by footpaths. It's based around the isthmus, with Tonsai Bay on the south side and Loh Dalum on the north.
Loh Dalum Bay is beautiful and enclosed, with shallow water that gets to bath temperatures and a vista that etches itself into your consciousness.
Laem Tong Beach in northern Phi Phi is reachable only by boat - total seclusion and there’s accommodation if you plan on staying around.
South west facing with views of Phi Phi Leh is Long Beach, with soft white sand, and excellent snorkeling. It’s five minutes from Tonsai.
'The Beach' was filmed here in 1999 and put Maya Bay on the map. Surrounded on three sides by limestone cliffs, and hiding several beaches within its interiors, this is Hollywood’s idea of paradise. Maya Bay is on Koh Phi Phi Leh and is reachable on day trips.
Loh Bagao is a tranquil bay on the east coast of Phi Phi Don, 800m long, absolutely great for hiking and with superb coral at the southern end.
Bamboo Island is 5km from northern Phi Don, only 500m across and with beautiful beaches around that lead to coral underwater. It’s a great place for snorkeling.
