The Andaman Sea is blessed with crystal clear water, beautiful geography and warm weather all year round. It remains Thailand’s leading destination for sailing, and one of the primary sailing centres in South East Asia.
The clearest and the calmest waters are off the west coast of the island near Patong. It is here that most Phuket sailing accommodation is centered, including luxury villas, serviced apartments, condominiums and hotels. The anchorages are exposed during the southwest monsoon season (June-October) with a 2 meter swell and the occasional on shore squall. There is a single beach break. In northwest monsoon season the anchorages offer a substantial 4 – 12m.
The anchorages on the west coast are as follows: Nai Harn, Kata Beach, Karon Beach, Patong, Bang Tao, Sarasin Beach. There’s year round anchorage on the south coast at Ao Chalong.
Sailing and yachting around Phuket offers some resplendent sights to the north, west and south of the island. The highlights include Pi Pi Islands, Phang Nga, Krabi, Similan Islands and Surin Islands.
Beyond the immediate surroundings of Phuket, sailors guide their vessels to further enchanting sights and stops. The Malacca straits take you down to Singapore, one of the busiest and liveliest ports in the world.
For an even greater adventure, head north to Myanmar’s Merqui Archipelago and further still, to India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, all of which are untapped and remote sailing paradises.
Chartering a yacht in Phuket is one of the most luxurious ways to experience the west coast of Thailand and the beautiful waters of the Andaman. The yacht charter option provides flexibility and comfort, and is absolutely trouble free. A number of yachts are available for charter on the island, each with a full crew, fully serviced and well maintained to international standards. Contact your local travel agent in Phuket for the latest availability and the best prices.
Services in Phuket for sailing and yachting are of international standard and dominate the tourist town centres. Marinas, sail makers, shops and repairs are part of the Phuket landscape.
For an experience matching the freedom and luxury of your own yacht, we recommend a Phuket villa for a sailing holiday. Accommodation has arisen around the marina and anchorages with sailors in mind so book ahead to secure these key locations.
The calendar provides a number of regattas and races off the coast of Phuket to keep the sailors and spectators happy. The largest and longest running is the Phuket Kong’s Cup Sailing Regatta, which was introduced in 1987 and is now part of the Raja Muda International Regatta, the Singapore Straits Regatta and the China Sea Race. The regatta takes place in early December.
The Koh Samui Regatta in March is the most boisterous event on the sailing calendar, a party that reaches both shores of Thailand.
